Albert Kwabena Dwumfour
The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has been elected as a member of the Steering Committee of the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ).
The virtual election took place on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, during the 5th Delegates Congress of FAJ, the Pan-African Regional Organisation of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ).
The newly elected nine-member leadership of FAJ will serve a three-year term. The committee includes Omar Faruk Osman from the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSJ) as President, Zied Dabbar from Tunisia as Vice President, and Maria Luisa Rogiero from Angola as Honorary Treasurer.
Other members of the Steering Committee are Erick Oduor from Kenya; Jean-Claude Coulibaly from Côte d’Ivoire; Sadig Ibrahim Ahmed Ibrahim from Sudan; Mohammed Et-Talbi from Morocco, and Obam Mejo Marion from Cameroon.
Expressing gratitude for the support received from individuals in Ghana and abroad, the GJA President acknowledged the success of his election.
During the FAJ Congress, he extended an invitation to delegates to attend the 3rd Africa Media Convention scheduled to be held in Accra in May 2024, ensuring them a memorable event.
Founded in 2007, FAJ serves as the regional organisation of IFJ affiliates in Africa, advocating for the social and professional rights of African journalists collectively.
FAJ supports unions and associations in promoting trade union development in the media industry in Africa, addressing professional issues, and protecting freedom of expression, the right to information, and journalists’ human rights as outlined in the Declaration of Principles of Freedom of Expression in Africa.
The largest organisation representing African journalists, FAJ, plays a crucial role at a Pan-African level by voicing journalists’ concerns at international platforms such as the United Nations, UNESCO, and AU.
The activities of FAJ are guided by its constitution adopted during triennial Congresses, where a steering committee and officers are elected.
