Osei Assibey Antwi inspecting the drains at Dagomba Line
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) is putting measures in place to help avert flooding in the city during the raining season this year.
Last year, the city recorded flooding which caused destruction to a number of properties.
The assembly, under the leadership of Osei Assibey Antwi, the Kumasi Mayor, has identified all the flood-prone areas in the city and formulated proper strategies.
The KMA has also identified all areas in the city with heaps of garbage that usually obstruct the flow of floodwaters.
Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi, on Sunday morning, led a team of KMA officials from the Waste Management and other departments to tour the city and identify the areas.
The Kumasi Mayor and his team visited areas such as the Asafo Market, BB Area, Asafo Interchange area and Oforikrom near the Poku Transport Yard, among others.
The team also visited the Dagomba Line area, where thousands of squatters living in wooden structures in the community had virtually turned the entire area into a dumping site.
It was revealed that the squatters usually dump refuse into the drains.
Speaking to DAILY GUIDE, Osei Assibey Antwi, who was unhappy with the development, expressed dissatisfaction with the bad odor at the place.
According to him, personnel of KMA would quickly clear the garbage that causes flooding in city.
“If we don’t clear the refuse, the entire area would be flooded when it rains and that can pose a threat to people and properties.
Hon Osei Assibey Antwi also admonished residents of Dagomba Line and other areas in the city to keep the environment clean so as to avert the spread of diseases such as cholera and malaria.
