Medical Mission Visits Ghana

William Alomatu

The Rotary Club of Accra Ring Road Central (District 9102), in conjunction with Rotary District 3250 (India), is organising a medical mission to Ghana.

The main objective of this mission is to offer free surgical care to patients who cannot afford surgical care, perform complex surgical operations together with local surgeons and offer free medical consultations where necessary.

The Rotary Club of Accra Ring Road Central for the past 31 years has been providing medical services and building medical facilities to assist deprived communities across the country. The club takes the issue of health very important and seizes all opportunities to be of service to the larger community.

The medical mission from India has already performed over 900 surgical procedures in Rwanda, Uganda and other East African countries over the past five years. The mission team wants to extend this service to West Africa and Ghana has been chosen as the first country to start with.

The mission will take place from May 4 to May14, 2017.

Rotary International is the world’s first service club organisation with more than 1.2 million members who volunteer their time and talent to further the Rotary motto, ‘service above self’.  Its members are also dedicated to providing community service to the under-privileged in the society.

The areas of focus to be considered by the mission include general surgery (plus laparoscopic and cholecystectomy procedures), plastic surgery, orthopaedic surgery, eye surgeries, oro-dental surgery, complex gynaecological surgeries and urology procedures

The project intends to screen about 4,000 people with eye, skin, heart, dental and other general health problems, with the hope of performing over 150 surgeries within Accra.

Partner hospitals for this mission comprise of LEKMA Hospital, La General Hospital and Ridge Regional Hospital.

Daily surgical operations will be conducted at all these partner hospitals. The team from India will be assisted by dedicated local surgeons in Ghana.

The President of the Rotary Club of Accra Ring Road Central, Mr William Alomatu, stressed the need for service organisations to be relentless in their efforts to help the needy in society and also collaborate with other civil society groups and institutions for such tasks.
