The Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) has taken a bold stance, declaring a nationwide strike to protest the deplorable conditions and unfair treatment faced by morticians.
This decisive action has brought attention to the long-overlooked plight of these essential workers.
In a statement, the workers said they have endured hazardous environments, inadequate protective gear, and insufficient facilities for far too long, adding that the lack of respect for their critical services has pushed them to the edge.
Repeated appeals to authorities have fallen on deaf ears, leaving MOWAG no choice but to take drastic action.
The General Secretary Richard Kofi Jordan, in a statement, emphasized that the strike is a last resort to safeguard members’ rights.
Labour Law Backs Strike
Section 159 of Ghana’s Labour Law, Act 651 (2003), legitimises the strike, allowing workers to withdraw services due to unsafe or unfair conditions.
The MOWAG says they are demanding improvement in their working conditions, fair wages and benefits and overtime pay.
MOWAG calls on the government, Ministry of Health, and stakeholders to intervene urgently.
Mr Jordan stressed that the strike aims to highlight mortuary workers’ plight, not harm the public.
