Mpohor DCE Confirmed

Ignatius Asaah Mensah, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s nominee for the position of District Chief Executive (DCE) for Mpohor in the Western Region, was on Monday confirmed by the assembly members.

He garnered 13 votes with five against him and that meant he had the two-thirds of the total votes cast as required for his confirmation.

The poll was conducted by the Electoral Commission under the supervision of Godwin Tawiah Okley, the District Electoral Officer, amidst tight security.

It would be recalled that prior to Mr Asaah Mensah’s confirmation, some irate supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the district had protested against his nomination for the DCE position and threatened that he would not be confirmed by the assembly members.

According to them, they could not fathom why the president did not listen to their plea to select someone who is from Mpohor as the area’s DCE.

They asserted that the major positions at Mpohor were being occupied by people who are from the Fiase tribe, indicating that their preferred choice for the position was Bernard Eshun, who is from Mpohor.

About ten armed police men and other security personnel were deployed to the venue for the confirmation exercise yesterday to ward off possible miscreants who might have wanted to disrupt the programme.

In his acceptance speech, Mr Assah Mensah thanked the president, the chiefs and people of Mpohor for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to work with them for the realization of the policies of the government.

He expressed his gratitude to the assembly members for the peaceful manner in which the confirmation was conducted and called for peace and team work, irrespective of party affiliations, in order to move the district –  which was created about five years ago – forward.

He called for unity so that together they could forge ahead to confront the numerous challenges facing the district.

The Deputy Regional Minister, Gifty Kusi, appealed to the assembly members to give Mr Asaah Mensah the necessary support and co-operation.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Mpohor, Alex Agyekum, who was happy about the entire proceedings, urged the people to bury their differences and support the newly confirmed DCE.
