Sammy Gyamfi
THE NATIONAL Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, is in hot waters as he faces a possible legal suit soon.
He has been given a 48-hour ultimatum to retract and apologize to Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, the Education Minister and Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia South, over some false remarks.
A similar 48-hour ultimatum has also been given to Kwame Zu, the Ashanti Regional NDC Secretary, who also peddled falsehood to tarnish the minister’s image in public.
If Gyamfi and Kwame Zu do not adhere to the request, then the Minister, who is also known as Napo, would drag them to court for redress.
False Statements
Sammy Gyamfi, addressing a press conference recently, said Seidu Abubakari, a suspect in the kidnapping of two Canadian girls in Kumasi, is an errand boy of Napo.
On his part, Kwame Zu, speaking on Okay FM Thursday, June 13, 2019 said “Seidu is a known NPP member, who works with Hon. Matthew Opoku Prempeh”.
Napo’s Lawyer
But in a sharp rebuttal, Sarkodie Baffuor Awuah and Partners, lawyers for Napo, have debunked the separate statements by Gyamfi and Kwame Zu against their client.
He said the statements by the two NDC officials were blatantly false, which tended to paint Napo in public as a promoter and beneficiary of thuggery.
“The statement is not only false but malicious as the said Seidu is no errand boy of our client”, separate letters sent to Gyamfi and Kwame Zu by Napo’s lawyers stated.
Napo’s lawyers also expressed sadness about the fact that the defamatory statement about their client was widely captured by the traditional and new media.
48-Hour Ultimatum
However, Napo’s lawyers said “Notwithstanding your malice, our client is magnanimous enough to offer you an opportunity to make amends”.
Lawyer Awuah stated that his client had instructed him to make some demands from Gyamfi and Kwame Zu, which when fulfilled, would prevent a court action.
He said his client was demanding a retraction and “an unqualified apology to our client, in the manner the statement in issue was published, within 48 hours of receipt of this notice”.
The lawyer added “please take notice, a notice is hereby served that we have firm instructions of our client to institute legal proceedings against you without recourse to you, should you fail to honour the aforementioned demands”.
