The ‘thugs’ leaving the scene
A group of ‘thugs’ believed to be associated with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Monday disrupted a campaign organised by the National Zongo Campaign Team of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at Tain in the Bono Region.
Videos making rounds capture the ‘thugs’, some of whom were wearing NDC-branded T-shirts, dismantling tents mounted by the NPP group at the Brohani community while attendants at the campaign event looked on.
They were then seen jumping into an NDC-branded pickup vehicle after the destruction, and sped off from the scene.
People could be heard in the background of the video pointing to a heavily built man wearing an NDC-branded T-shirt as the person who had fired a gun.
After reviewing the video, DAILY GUIDE could however, not confirm that gun shots were fired, and at no point in any of the videos was any individual seen carrying a gun.
The chaos however, did not stop the NPP team from spreading the campaign messages of its candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who many have tipped to win the December 7 election.
It was not clear what caused the unprovoked attack by the NDC group, but some say it could be related to the opposition party’s fears of the NPP making significant strides in the NDC stronghold.
Tain is traditionally a favourable ground for the NDC, but the NPP has in past elections made gains in the region, and has put in place measures to gain more votes from there.
This, according to some, is not going down well with the NDC who intend to retain their stronghold and make sure the NPP has no chance of penetration.
The latest attack further confirms the fears of the opposition NDC of the NPP leaving a mark in the region come December 7, 2024, when Ghanaians elect a new president and Members of Parliament.
