Okuapehemaa Gets Funeral Date

The late Nana Dokua

The Chiefs and people of Akuapem in the Eastern Region have settled on April 11 to May 1, 2017 as the dates for the final funeral rites and burial of the late Okuapehemaa Nana Dokua, the Queen Mother of the area.

Nana Dokua was enstooled queen mother of the Akuapem state in 1966 and ruled for fifty (50) years in that capacity until her demise on July 2, 2016 at the age of 94.

The late Nana Dokua who was a devoted member of the Church of Pentecost, Akropong District was held in high esteem for her ability to combine true Christian and traditional practices during her reign.

Addressing a very high powered delegation of representatives of Okuapeman Chiefs and Queen mothers at his Ankaase Palace at Aburi on Sunday, Otoobour Djan Kwasi II, Adontenhene of Akuapem announced that the final funeral rites of the late queen mother will begin from April 11-1st May, 2017 at Akropong Akuapem, the traditional headquarters.

According to him two weeks ban (April 11- 25, 2017) on noise making including holding of funerals among others had been imposed on the communities forming the Okuapeman State.

Otoobour Djan Kwasi II who is also the Chief of Aburi explained that the two weeks ban was to allow adequate physical and spiritual preparations  by the Chiefs and elders to prepare the grounds for a befitting funeral and burial of the queen mother.

The Aburihene warned against the use of mobile phones to take pictures of the mortal remains while in state adding that only accredited persons would be allowed to do so on that day.

The spokesperson for the Amaa Ogyaa Royal Family, Opanin Daniel Awere, speaking on behalf of the bereaved Royal Family added that schools would be closed during the period.
