Scores of individuals and corporate institutions queued to donate generously to support the construction of an emergency maternity block at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.

The Head of Despite Group of Companies, Osei Kwame Despite, topped the donors’ list as he donated GH¢200,000 to support the construction of the health facility.

Top dignitaries at the function, including the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and his wife, Lady Julia, First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo and Second Lady Samira Bawumia were thrilled over the donations.

The donors were seen in long queues as they donated cash, building materials and other equipment needed to make the construction a success.

The Asantehene and the first lady expressed appreciation to all the donors for the level of patronage. Held at the Manhyia Palace, the donation for the construction of the medical facility was spearheaded by Rebecca Akufo-Addo, and it is to help raise a total of GH¢10 million in Accra and Kumasi.

The facility will be completed in four months’ time.

The project which is being facilitated by the Rebecca Foundation, owned by the first lady, is code named as ‘Save a Child, Save a Mother’ and it is intended to stop rampant deaths of mothers and children at KATH.

Other prominent donors during the Sunday’s event were Special Ice, GH¢ 150,000, and Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) chairman, GH¢ 100,000.

Others were Access Bank, GH¢ 100,000; Tobinco Pharmaceuticals, GH¢ 100,000; NIB, GH¢100,000; Angel Group of Companies, GH¢100,000; Kessben Group of Companies, GH¢ 100,000; Adade Mensah, GH¢ 20,000 and Champion Divine Clinic, GH¢ 20,000.

Mrs Akufo-Addo assured that aside the construction of the emergency maternity block, her foundation would also work assiduously to support other health facilities to boost healthcare in the country.

Lady Julia Osei Tutu, wife of the Asantehene, on her part, lauded the first lady for leading a crusade to start a project that would stop the deaths of mothers and children at KATH.
