Pan African Youth Orchestra (PAYO)
The Pan African Youth Orchestra (PAYO) will perform at the Alliance Française on Saturday, June 2 in Accra as part of preparations for a performance tour of the United States of America.
The July 2018 tour, which will be in the state of California, is in collaboration with the Santa Monica Youth Orchestra.
It will include performances in Santa Monica, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Tijuana in New Mexico.
The orchestra recently toured some parts of Ghana, including Cape Coast, Sekondi, Takoradi, Ho, Koforidua and Accra.
The lecture/performance tour of Ghana is set to continue on the group’s return from the US with a tour of the northern half of the country.
In October 2018, the group is expected to perform at the Felabration Festival in the Nigerian capital, Lagos, alongside planned trips to Southern Africa to showcase this unique ensemble, which has surprised audiences with their unique style of music.
The group is noted for rhythms from a vast array of traditional instruments like giant ‘fontonfrom’, xylophones, ‘atentenben’, talking drums and a variety of shakers/ bells sent the audience on a musical journey that was definitely on the contemporary tip but with its heart and soul firmly embedded in Africa.
