Transport Fares Go Up

Transport operators in Accra

The Road Transport Operators in the transport industry have finally increased transport fares by 15 percent.

The new fares take effect from Thursday, April 6, 2017.

The increment is said to be in line with the Administrative Instrument on public transport fares.

Information gathered by DAILY GUIDE indicates that the transport operators met officials of the Ministry of Transport over the review of fares.

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) yesterday concluded deliberations and sanctioned the increment after a closed door meeting, which lasted for hours.

The increment is coming at a time when fuel prices have been reduced, appreciably within the last two weeks.

According to reports, the new fares for both intra-city, intercity and taxis had already been decided by the stakeholders of the transport unions.

A statement released by the Road Transport Operators said, “In line with the Administrative Instrument on public transport fares, the Road Transport Operators have reviewed the prices of various elements that go into running of commercial transport services and have increased road transport fares by 15%. The Road Transport Operators have therefore issued Road Transport Fares.”

The statement was jointly signed by Kwame Kuma and Andrew Kwesi Kwakye, National Chairman of GPRTU and Acting General Secretary of GRTCC respectively on behalf of Road Transport Operators.

The GPRTU had warned all its members to desist from increasing transport fares until new fares were announced after negotiations.
