UCC Distance Education Progresses

University of Cape Coast (UCC)

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, has disclosed that the College of Distance education (CoDE) of the University has initiated plans to commence the top-up to M.Phil and M.Com programmes for graduates, who want to pursue further studies in October this year.

According to him, graduates with M.Ed and MBA would have the opportunity to enroll to pursue the programme via the distance mode of education.

He made this known during the congregation for students who completed the courses at the various study centres of CoDE during the 2015/2016 academic year.

A total of 10,241 students, who completed their diploma and degree courses respectively through the distance mode, graduated during the ceremony spanning three days.

The Vice Chancellor said the College was also seeking accreditation that would lead to the introduction of an M.Phil programme in Information Technology (IT) Education to upgrade the existing M.Ed IT programme, adding that they would also introduce diploma in IT programme.

“We are committed to open more study centres across the country with the aim of making university education accessible to both public and private sector workers since education has been the bedrock of every nation’s development,” he added.

Touching on quality assurance mechanisms, he stated that the University would not compromise on quality despite the flexibility of the distance mode of education.

“The College of Distance Education has put in place a lot of quality assurance measures in order to make distance learning enjoyable and as effective as the regular system. Academic modules are currently being reviewed to make them more user-friendly, as well as expand the frontiers of distance education at UCC,” he said.

Prof Ampiah revealed that a series of training programmes had been outlined for course tutors to keep them abreast of new ways.

This would help in improving their efficiency in the delivery process and make them more accustomed to modern ways of meeting the increasing needs of a rather mature group of students offering distance education,” he stated.

Prof. Ampiah advised the graduands to remain focused and take advantage of the numerous opportunities.
