Vulcanisers Want Safety Regulations

THE Association of Vulcanisers of Ghana has called on the government to put down measures to regulate their institution.

According to them, applying regulations to the sector of vulcanising will bring sensitisation to fish out the unqualified agencies in the institution.

The General Secretary of the Association, Basiru Karim, who made this known during a presser said, “We ask the government to give us safety regulations that will make our agencies go according to the rules of the job.”

He explained that, “We are demanding for the regulations at least for some certification for us to know those who are performing their duties well and those who are not.

“Everyone knows the low level of education of vulcanisers, and there are no technical institutions in this country that teaches some aspects of the profession, so we organise ourselves to get some education that will help in our sector.”

Karim advised drivers to take instructions from vulcanisers rather than imposing their ideas, adding that drivers should check the certificate of vulcanisers before giving tires to them.

“Mostly, when the drivers send the tyres to vulcanisers, they want to direct them what to do but that is not the right thing, they should take instructions from us,” he added.

He urged the drivers to send their work to vulcanisers who are qualified and have certificates for better results.

Kwame Koduah Atuahene, an official from Ghana Road Safety Authority, who schooled them on road safety issues, also disclosed that a draft regulation for the vulcanisers was ready for Parliament approval.

He hinted that, the Ghana Road Safety Authority is putting measures in place to educate vulcanisers, for them to render quality job to drivers to curb road accidents.

He said, “In our new dispensation, we are looking at how we can register, train and also grant accreditation or certification to these operators just so that when all of us find the needs to service our tyres, which is very important to the safety issue, we can have the assurance.”

The Association of Vulcanisers of Ghana was established in 2011 and legally registered with about 320 members from the various regions to promote the main objectives of the association.
