A woman believed to be in her late 70s was burnt to death in a three-bedroom house at Supomu Dunkwa in the Shama District of the Western Region on Tuesday evening.
The cause of the inferno was not immediately known.
The eyewitnesses said they saw a spark in the house moments before the fire gutted the building.
The elderly woman was said to be sleeping in the apartment when the fire started.
Owner of the apartment, whose name was given only as Mr Enzeh and a teacher in the community, was outside when the fire started at about 8:00pm, according to the eyewitnesses.
Two grandchildren of the deceased, who was bedridden, managed to escape and shouted for help but she could not be saved.
The firemen used about 30 minutes to bring the fire under control to retrieve the charred body of the old woman.
The residents asserted that the deceased was the mother-in-law of the teacher, who owns the apartment.
Meanwhile, the teacher has since failed to comment on the matter due to his grief.
The body of the deceased has since been conveyed to the Effia-Nkwanta Hospital morgue while investigations have commenced to establish the cause of the fire.
