Yagbonwura Heads Northern Regional House of Chiefs

Yagbon-Wura Tuntumba Boru-Essa II with other chiefs

The Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom Yagbon-Wura Tuntumba Boru-Essa II has been elected the new president of the Northern Regional House of Chiefs.

The Yagbonwura replaces the overlord of the Mamprugu Traditional Area Nayiri Sheriga Mahami Bohugu who steered the affairs of the Northern Regional House of Chiefs for the past four years.

The Yagbon-Wura urged the Judicial Committee of the house to expedite action on the pending cases at the Northern Regional House of Chiefs.

He cautioned the entire body of the chieftaincy institution to uphold the 1992 Constitution which debars Chiefs from participating in active politics saying ‘I will be the first to take measures against any Chief in my Kingdom who flouts this basic provision with impunity’.

The Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom advised that Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) should be used to solve chieftaincy and land disputes in the region.

He appealed to seasoned politicians to do politics devoid of insults adding that the youth should not allow themselves to be used for cheap politics that will mar the peace of the nation.

The Minister for Chieftaincy and Traditional Affairs, Dr. Danaa said the Amendment of section 63D of the Chieftaincy Act 2008 Act 759 is before Parliament.

According to the Minister, the amendment is to restore some power to Chiefs to enable them summon people.

He thanked all Chiefs for the support and cooperation given to the Ministry and the government for the entire four years of their administration.
