2 Female MCEs Confirmed

Sarah Dugbake Pobee at Ada East District Assembly

TWO OUT of the five women appointed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to serve as Chief Executives at the various Municipal and District Assemblies in the Greater Accra Region have been confirmed.

On Monday, one of the nominees was rejected by members of the Assembly after she failed to secure the two-thirds of the votes required to carry the day.

The nominee for the Ledzokuku-Kwowor (LEKMA), Adjeley Twum Gyamrah was last week confirmed by Assembly Members to become the MCE for the area.

She polled 33 out of the 33 votes cast, representing 100 per cent of the votes.

Janet Tulasu Mensah, the nominee for Ga East Municipal Assembly (GEMA), was however not that lucky. The initial round of voting did not favour her. She polled 8 out of 14 votes cast. But she believed she would make it in the second round.

Meanwhile, President’s nominee for the Ada East District Assembly, Sarah Dugbakie Pobee was kicked out by the Assembly Members.

Of the 36 members of the assembly, comprising 27 elected and 9 appointees present, 13 voted ‘yes’, in her favour, representing 36.1 percent while 23 voted against her nomination as the new District Chief Executive (DCE).

The result also meant that she would not have the chance for second round of voting as she fell short of the 50 percent requirement.

The exercise was supervised by the Regional Electoral officer of the Electoral Commission (EC), Kwame Amoah and witnessed by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Ishmael Ashitey, NPP Regional Women’s Organiser, Joyce Zimpare, and Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe Ghansah and other dignitaries.

There was intense lobbying for the votes of the assembly members prior to the voting yet she was denied the endorsement.

The Regional Minister appealed to the assembly members to eschew petty politics and confirm the nominee.

The assembly is expected to meet to fix a date for another attempt to confirm or reject the nominee; that is if the president re-appoints her. The nominee until her appointment was a business woman and currently the Deputy Women’s Organiser for Ada East Constituency.

However, Mrs. Jenifer Dede Afagbedzi and Gladys Mann Dedey, nominees for La Nkwantanang Madina Municipal Assembly (LaNMMA) and La Dade Kotopon Municipal Assembly (LaDMA) respectively are awaiting their fate as they are yet to be voted for.
