Three technicians tasked to perform maintenance work in an underground fuel reservoir owned by the Produce Buying Company (PBC) did not make it back alive.
The routine job became the end of the road for the trio, Ashie, Octopus and Jonathan after they lifted the reservoir cover and climbed down at the COCOBOD office in Koforidua in the Eastern Region.
The heartbreaking incident occurred on October 9, 2023, about 11:30 a.m.
DAILY GUIDE gathered that the technicians died from suffocation in the underground fuel reservoir.
They were among five workers contracted to perform the maintenance work inside the tank.
Ashie is believed to be in his early 60s, while Octopus was said to be in his 40s and Jonathan in his 20s.
Reports said when the first worker went in and did not return, another worker went to check on his colleague and neither did he nor a third man who went in after return.
Two masons on the scene, who were working with the victims, apparently raised the alarm about the unfortunate incident.
A response team comprising officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation, the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Ambulance Service, and the Ghana National Fire Service arrived on the scene.
They recovered the bodies of the victims from the underground tank and subsequently conveyed them to the St. Joseph’s Hospital mortuary at Effiduase for preservation.
Investigations are underway to ascertain the cause of the incident.
