A total of thirty-five former Regional Executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper East Region have declared their unwavering support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to become the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 General Elections.
At a press conference in Bolgatanga on Friday, January 23, 2026, Alhaji Issah Sanusi, former Regional Communication Director of the party, said Dr. Bawumia’s leadership experience and vision for the party and the country are the key reasons for their endorsement.
“We therefore unequivocally declare our unflinching support and loyalty to Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the immediate past Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party. Dr. Bawumia is best positioned to lead the NPP back to victory and reclaim power from the NDC,” he said.”
Highlighting his competence, humility, and dedication, the former executives also praised the former Vice President’s vision for Ghana, emphasizing humanity, inclusive development, and sustainable socio-economic transformation for all.

The endorsement comes ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer election slated for January 31, 2026, which Kennedy Agyapong, a former Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Dr. Bryan Acheampong – MP for Abetifi and former Minister for Agriculture, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Former Minister of Education, and Kwabena Agyepong – Former Presidential Press Secretary and NPP General Secretary, are seeking to win to lead NPP to the 2028 election.
However, former Regional Executives in the Upper East Region are urging all delegates to rally behind the former president, Dr. Bawumia, citing his experience in leading the party into the 2024 elections, his popularity, his proven track record in various fields, and his ability to unite the party ahead of the 2028 General elections.
