Angry-protestors blocking the road with tyres and wood
Angry residents of Kuwait, Aprabon and Oti blocked the main road on Wednesday morning with wood and tyres to protest against stench emanating from a landfill site in the area.
According to the protesters, the stench emanating from Oti Landfill Site, where garbage from the various parts of Kumasi are dumped, was creating health problems for them.
The protesters, who wore red armed bands and sang war songs, prevented vehicles that were supposed to dump garbage at the landfill site, which created commotion.
Police personnel therefore rushed to the place to prevent a clash between the protestors and the drivers.
Speaking to DAILY GUIDE, Elliot Fosu Bannor, Assembly member for Kuwait, Aprabon, Oti Electoral Area, said the Oti Landfill Site had not been fumigated for some time now, resulting in the bad odour.
He said that mosquitoes and house flies breed at the landfill site, noting that many people had died through Malaria and Cholera.
Fosu Bannor aka ‘Puulele called on the relevant authorities to fumigate the landfill site and also desilt the Sisa River to prevent flooding, adding that the roads in the area should be constructed with immediate effect.
He said the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) had neglected his electoral area, warning that they would not allow people to dump garbage at Oti until their demands are met.
Francis K. Frimpong aka ‘Wofa K’, an opinion leader in the community, disclosed that malaria and cholera cases had increased in the area, appealing to the KMA to come to their rescue.
