Delta force
Indiscipline is certainly not one of President Akufo-Addo’s hallmarks. Discipline and respect for the rule of law are and he has sacrificed so much to uphold the latter when it was threatened by politicians at various times of the country’s contemporary political history.
It is for this reason that we are our wits end when some overzealous political activists go overboard in expressing themselves when faced with perceived challenges.
We have for instance witnessed a growing instance of activists in the fold of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) getting close to NDC rating indiscipline since the pendulum of power changed position.
So much has happened since the Delta Force episode and we do not intend to dwell on it beyond stating that it was but one of the instances hereby alluded to. It took the party leadership aback when it happened: it gave easy headlines to newspapers and even radio stations.
The shock we endured when it happened is almost over and all we can wish is that it never happens again in our body-politics. As for over-flogging it, the NDC would do so for want of something negative to hold on to and abundance of blemishes they have suffered.
Indiscipline continues to be the bane of our development and its replacement with orderliness in the fields of finance, good governance and social life should be the preoccupation of all Ghanaians.
Policy changes such as the ones the new administration has come up with would take about a year to manifest in the manner that would catch the eyes of the ordinary man in the street.
It is preposterous therefore to expect dividends from these changes overnight.
For those who claim to support the President, their love for him should manifest in their strict respect for the rule of law and all that he stands for.
When party supporters go to misconduct themselves at the Customs Headquarters because they have underpaid their customs duties such persons cannot be helping the President to achieve his goals.
They are selfish and insincere persons who scream at the top of their voices in support of the President but turn round to abuse the institutions of state implementing the policies of the same head of state.
A few days ago, a nasty scene was recorded when a known supporter of the ruling party virtually insulted state officers simply because they were doing their work.
No country would grow when such attitudes are allowed to grow. Ours is a country requiring progress and not retrogression.
Countries in the other hemisphere have reached their enviable statuses because of discipline. The unrivalled quality education and good governance in countries which do not come near us in terms of natural resources is because of the special place of discipline in all spheres of human endeavour.
Education in Finland is superior and full of lessons for countries like ours; the country’s all-round discipline serving as an important factor.
President Akufo-Addo’s vision for the country demands a radical change in our attitude and not the ‘my government is in power’ attitude. Thankfully the President would be the last person to condone indiscipline. If you love President Akufo-Addo, the NPP and Ghana then let discipline run through your attitude.
