Police Plan Mentoring Programme For Recruits

To build systematic resilience against unprofessionalism within the police service, the police administration will from their next recruitment, introduce a fully developed mentoring and coaching program which will be infused in a newly developed probation- training curriculum.

This programme, according to the Inspector General of Police, David Asante Apeatu, is geared to re- engineer field training as an anchor for baseline development in the service.

The Inspector General of Police revealed this at the opening ceremony of 48 cadet officers’ course at the Police Academy in Accra.

“The uniqueness of this course is based on the fact that it is pivoted on revised syllabi with the application of content delivery methods which have been tried and tested against international standards.”

Touching on the cadet officers’ course, Mr Apeatu said since the beginning of this year, several training courses in specialized areas and fields had been conducted for personnel.

“Notable among these were courses in criminal investigations, first line supervisors course, motorbike patrol training programme, counter terrorism course, workshop on service enquiry among others.”

He urged the cadet officers to work assiduously to justify their selection into the academy

ACP Mr Darko Odei Lomotey, commandant of the Ghana Police Academy, in an address said, the selected officers comprised 27 females and 109 males making a total of 136 personnel.

“ This cadet training course which commenced May 4, 2018 will take six months and it has been designed to take the cadets through relevant topical  areas including police intelligence gathering, criminal procedure, practical police duties, criminal justice, police operations/planning and patrols, financial management, basic officer skills, anti-human trafficking, among others.”

He noted that the courses will expand their scope of knowledge for effective police work and help them to achieve their goals of ongoing transformational programme introduced by the Inspector General of Police, in accordance with the Vision and Mission of the service.

“Cadet Officers will be made aware of the five thematic areas of the transformational programme including welfare and professional development of officers, community policing, criminal investigation, monitoring and international affairs and information communication technology.

Other senior police officers present included, COP Dr George Dampare, director general  in charge of research and planning , director general in charge of Human Resource Development, COP Beatrice Vib Sanziri, director general in charge of the Criminal Investigations Department,  DCOP Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo Danquah among others.
