Some of the aggrieved residents expressing their displeasure
SOME AGGRIEVED residents of Ningo in the Ningo-Prampram District of the Greater Accra Region have demonstrated, demanding from government a district status for the area.
The residents have also served a notice concerning their intention to sever all ties with the Ningo-Prampram District Assembly (NiPDA) until their request is granted.
In October 17, 2017, the people of Ningo decided to be an integral part of the NiPDA.
Addressing a press conference to formally announce the reversal of the decision of the Ningo people not to partake in the activities of the NiPDA, Nene Kanor Atiapah III, the Mankralo of Ningo Traditional Area, explained that “actually we don’t have any problem with the people of Prampram. It is the decisions of previous governments that caused the dispute. We move together and go to the Regional House of Chiefs together”.
He added: “The people of Ningo knew the district headquarters would be sited at Ningo and then it changed hands because of a directive from government. That annoyed the Ningos and we said we won’t join them to become one people at the district assembly about five years ago.”
He said while the elders of the town were making the declaration not to join Prampram, they made certain pronouncements. “So we had to reverse them by performing some rites as custom demands,” he revealed.
Nene Atiapah further observed that things had not gone on well for Ningo after refusing to participate in the activities of the district assembly; hence their decision to rescind.
With regard to the creation of some new districts about two years ago, residents of Ningo were incensed at government’s failure to give them a new district.
The incensed residents took to the streets to protest against what they believed was a calculated attempt by successive governments to deny the area of development.
Holding several placards and wearing arm bands, the aggrieved residents accused the Greater Accra Regional Minister of deceiving them into calling off their earlier standoff with the Prampram District Assembly.
Ebenezer Amanor, spokesperson for a group calling itself ‘Great Ningo Youth Association’ is asking the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Ishmael Ashitey, to ensure that government gives Ningo a new district.
According to him, the intervention of the Regional Minister in the matter caused them to rescind their decision of not joining the current Ningo-Prampram District.
He therefore asked the youth to be patient whilst the government considered the possibility of creating a district for them.
