The Principal of Holy Child College of Education in Takoradi, Dr Francis Hull Adams, has praised the government for initiating a number of development projects in the college that will enhance teaching and learning.
Dr Adams said, “there have been positive developments in the area of infrastructure since the college’s last congregation in 2021”, he indicated.
He mentioned that the projects which are all funded by the Ghana Education Trust fund ‘(GETFund)’ include the completion of an old Assembly hall or auditorium which started in 2004.
He also mentioned the completion of the first phase of 3-storey lecture hall complex which was started in January 2022.
He said the second phase of the project has started in earnest and that when completed the project will dramatically change and transform the infrastructure landscape of the College.
He revealed that the College will virtually move to the new site as the project will take care of lecture halls, Language laboratory, Art Studio, Performing Art Studio and Social Studies Room.
The Principal disclosed this at the First Congregation of Bachelor of Education Programme of the College in Takoradi.
It was on the theme, “Championing the Course of Gender and Inclusive Education: the Female Factor in Teacher Education”
In all 274 students graduated and out of the number, 12 had First Class, 137 obtained Second Class Upper; 109, Second Class Lower and 16 of them had Third Class.
He said work on an Early Childhood Development Centre which was started in 2016 but stalled for some years, has also been completed under this government. He said the conversion of 1 Level Science Laboratory into 2 Levels three Science Laboratories which started in 2019 is 38 per cent complete.
“The only project which has not received attention from the contractor is the 300 capacity hostel project started by the government of Ghana for all Colleges of Education. The contractor came to clear the site in 2022, since then nothing has taken place”, he stated.
He continued “Beside the GETFUND projects, we have been able to sink two boreholes through our internally generated revenue for the purpose of supplying water to the entire campus and for our Pure Water Mechanization project”.
Challenges
He mentioned overaged operational vehicles, poor internal road network, inadequate washrooms for students and staff, inadequate halls of residence for students among others, as challenges.
Guest speaker, Prof. Lydia Aziato, Vice Chancellor, University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho who said the concept of free education, school feeding programme, and other similar intervention aimed at increasing access to education is very laudable.
