Alban S.K. Bagbin
In a recent development, the Majority Caucus in Parliament has vehemently criticized Speaker Alban S.K. Bagbin for abruptly halting the approval process for Ministers and Deputy Ministers of State nominated by the President and vetted by the Appointments Committee of Parliament.
This action by Bagbin was prompted by a pending court application seeking an injunction against the approval of the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill. However, the Majority Caucus has accused him of acting unilaterally in adjourning the House, which they believe undermines the government’s authority.
In a statement released on March 20, 2024, the Caucus expressed their discontent with Bagbin’s decision.
They pointed out that the Speaker’s move was arbitrary, capricious, and undemocratic, as it did not involve consulting the House’s members or its Leadership, who are traditionally responsible for guiding the Chair in conducting the business of the House.
Bagbin’s decision to adjourn the House had significant consequences on various important proceedings.
These included issues such as tax waivers, laying of papers, consideration of bills, outstanding IDA facility, and the approval of ministerial nominees.
Pointing out the grave repercussions of Bagbin’s actions, the Majority Caucus stated, “The consequences are clear that the economy will suffer and government business will be undermined because of the pleasure of one man.” They emphasized that this unilateral decision undermines the progress of the country and hinders the smooth functioning of democratic processes.
Additionally, the Majority Caucus accused the Minority of backing the Speaker’s actions due to their relentless pursuit of power at the expense of nurturing animosity towards the government.
This clash between the Majority Caucus and Speaker Bagbin highlights the tensions within Parliament, where different factions are grappling over the control and direction of the government’s agenda. It remains to be seen how this disagreement will be resolved and what consequences it may have on the overall governance of the country.
