Stephen Blewett and Joyce Appiah breaking grounds for the construction of Digital Laboratory
In commemoration of MTN Ghana’s 30th anniversary, the 21 Days Y’ello Care initiative, an annual volunteer programme instituted 17 years ago to allow staff volunteer their skills and services freely for the benefit of the community while investing in identified community improvement projects, has been extended to 30 days.
The themed, “Education for Rural and Remote Communities – Learn Today, Lead Tomorrow” emphasises the important role education plays in transforming communities, strengthening socio-economic growth and prosperity, and preparing the youth with the necessary knowledge, skills, and resources for the future.
Addressing students of the Presbyterian Senior High Technical School, at Aburi during the launch of the initiative, MTN Ghana CEO, Stephen Blewett, said the 2024 edition of 30 Days of Y’ello Care campaign will significantly impact the communities MTN Ghana serves, help bridge some of the educational gaps and barriers faced in rural communities, and ultimately help shape an equitable digital future for the country.
“Our aim here is to touch the lives of students in this school. MTN began Y’ello Care many years ago and this year instead of 21 days we are doing 30 days and we are because this is a school that is doing very well in education,” he said.
Mr. Blewett mentioned that the students will undergo some digital training skills such as a digital classroom which includes the provision of computers and access to digital resources and the preparation of fields for planting vegetables.
“This planting will use the borehole we have constructed, controlled by the Internet of Things. Using connectivity on your phone or computer you can turn the tap on and off,” he said.
Meanwhile, MTN cut sod for the construction of the digital container laboratory which will be completed within the 30 days earmarked for the training program.
The school’s Headmistress, Joyce Appiah, expressed gratitude to MTN Ghana for its commitment to supporting communities with its Y’ello Care.
She said the establishment of the Digital Center will foster innovation, creativity, and critical thinking, preparing students for careers in technology and bridging the digital divide.
