The National Apprenticeship Programme (NAP) has been launched in Ho, Volta Region, with a matriculation and induction ceremony held at the Jubilee Park.
The landmark event, brought together newly admitted apprentices, master craft persons, government officials, and stakeholders in skills development.
The event was graced by the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, and the Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority (NYA), Osman Abdulai Ayariga.
Mr. Gunu described the launch of the NAP in the Volta Region as a “pivotal moment” for both the youth and the economic transformation of the region.
He explained that the initiative, a flagship programme of President John Mahama’s administration, is a direct response to youth unemployment and skills gaps in the country.
“Through this initiative, the government is not just creating opportunities but building a skilled workforce that will shape the future of this country,” he said.
He further disclosed that the programme is backed by a GH¢300 million allocation in the 2025 budget to ensure its successful rollout and sustainability.
Mr. Abdulai Ayariga, hailed the programme as one of the ‘boldest expressions’ of the NYA’s mission to empower young people.
“The National Apprenticeship Programme is a bridge between raw talents and employable skills, between dreams and livelihoods, and between potential and prosperity,” he said.
He added that the initiative ties in seamlessly with the Volta Region’s long-standing ‘heritage of resilience and industry,’ commending the resourcefulness and discipline of the region’s youth.
For the pilot phase in the Volta Region, a total of 2,060 apprentices have been enrolled and will be trained by 412 Master Craft Persons across various trades.
The beneficiaries took their matriculation pledge, and were presented with identification cards and training materials, marking the official start of their journey under the programme.
They are expected to receive free, high-quality, competency-based training, monthly stipends, and essential start-up equipment upon graduation.
Stakeholders expressed optimism that the NAP will not only reduce unemployment but also stimulate entrepreneurship, promote self-reliance, and enhance the region’s economic fortunes.
