Ghana is mourning the loss of one of its most celebrated innovators and spiritual leaders, Apostle Dr. Kwadwo Safo, affectionately known as Kantanka, the African Star.
The founder of Kantanka Automobile and the Kristo Asafo Mission Church, passed on peacefully on Thursday, 11 September 2025. He was 77.
In a statement signed by his daughter, former Member of Parliament (MP) for Dome Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, the family and the Kristo Asafo Church confirmed his passing, quoting Romans 14:8: “For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord.”
Describing him as “a gallant son” and “a true legend,” the family said Apostle Safo’s life was defined by struggle, resilience, courage, and unwavering dedication to God and country.
He is remembered as a preacher, philanthropist, agriculturalist, industrialist, and a technological pioneer whose innovations inspired a generation and gave Ghana a proud place in African industrial history.
“Ghana has indeed lost a gallant son and a true legend,” the statement read. “Apostle Safo was a true genius, a beacon of hope for many, and a father to the fatherless.”
Born on August 26, 1948, in Bekwai, Ashanti Region, Apostle Safo carved an indelible legacy through the Kristo Asafo Church, the Kantanka Group of Companies, and his groundbreaking work in local automobile manufacturing. His impact stretched beyond industry into education, agriculture, and philanthropy, earning him admiration both in Ghana and across Africa.
The Safo family has appealed for privacy during this time of mourning, noting that details of burial and funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
