Manhyia Bans Use Of Live Bullets At Asantehemaa’s Funeral

The Manhyia Palace has announced a strict ban on the firing of live bullets during the final funeral rites of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Ama Konadu Yiadom III, in Kumasi.

The four-day event, which commenced yesterday, September 15, and ends on Thursday, September 18, is expected to attract large numbers of mourners, including chiefs, government officials, diplomats, and members of the royal family.

Otumfuo’s linguist, Baffour Kantankrankyi, briefing the media at the palace, explained that the measure is to safeguard the lives of attendees.

“We have asked all chiefs and individuals attending the burial rites to avoid using live bullets. Any individual found flouting this directive will face the consequences, including arrest and prosecution,” he said.

The firing of muskets and guns form part of cultural celebrations in the Ashanti Region, symbolising the bravery of chiefs and the loyalty of their warriors. However, these displays are usually performed with gunpowder instead of live ammunition.

The palace clarified that this symbolic practice will continue at the funeral, but without live bullets, to prevent accidents and ensure a peaceful atmosphere.

The directive, authorities say, reflects Manhyia’s commitment to both cultural preservation and public safety during this historic occasion.
