2 Killed As Canoe Capsize In River

TWO PEOPLE have been found dead after a canoe they were travelling on suddenly capsized on the Offin River near Achiase in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region last Thursday morning.

According to reports, six people were in the canoe when the accident happened, but four of them, including two Nigerian nationals, were rescued alive and rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

Following an intensive search in the river after the accident, one of the missing persons was eventually found dead on Friday, with the last person being found on Saturday. One of the dead persons has been identified only as Alex.

Information reaching the paper indicated that the six people onboard the canoe were going to work in their farms when calamity suddenly struck. Meanwhile, a Nyinahin District Police report earlier on confirmed the accident.

It said, “Today, 25/9/2025 at about 0950 hours, information was received from Nana Osei Tutu, the Benkumhene of Achiase by Adobewura Police that, same day at about 0920 hours, six persons from Achiase who were crossing the River Offin at Achiase to the Afepaye Bank of the River were drowned after the canoe transporting them capsized mid-way into their journey.

“On receipt of the complaint, police immediately proceeded to the scene at Achiase where a search party had successfully rescued four of the victims alive.

“Those rescued have been identified as Anabel Paul, aged 22 years, Amina Daniel, aged 28 years; both Nigerian nationals and Alex Kwadwo Acheampong aged 42 years. The other rescued victim could not be contacted.”

The police said “a search party has been dispatched on the river with the prospect of retrieving the two others alive. Police further visited the two Nigerian nationals at Ntoboroso Clinic where they were admitted and receiving treatment.”

Meanwhile, the paper has gathered that bodies of the two dead people, which are nearing decomposition state, have been deposited in a morgue for autopsy, as police investigations into the accident are ongoing.
