Ben Abdallah Alhassan at one of the flood-prone areas
The Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly has intensified efforts to tackle flooding by earmarking several unauthorised buildings along the Aboabo storm drain for demolition.
According to the Assembly, the structures — most of which were put up without permits — obstruct the free flow of water and worsen flooding anytime there are downpours.
Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr. Ben Abdallah Alhassan, speaking during the exercise, noted that owners of the affected properties had been granted a final window to act.
“We have issued a week’s ultimatum to those involved to remove the buildings themselves. If they fail, the Assembly will move in with heavier machinery to complete the task and recover the cost from them,” he stated.
He further explained that the demolition was part of a broader enforcement drive to restore sanity in land use and construction across the municipality.
“This is not a one-off exercise. Any structure that is wrongly sited, especially on watercourses, will be pulled down. We are determined to ensure safety and order in our communities,” the MCE added.
The initiative comes at a time when fears of flooding are heightened by ongoing rains. City authorities maintain that clearing drains of encroachments remains critical in protecting both lives and property.
