Ada Chiefs Angry Over Burning Chief’s Corpse

Some elders of the Traditional Council. INSET: Nene Abram Kabu Akuaku

ELDERS OF the Ada Traditional Council have expressed their displeasure over the Tehey incident which has resulted in the killing of a mourner and the burning of the corpse of the late chief of Tehey, Nene Mensah Zotorvie V.

The chiefs have condemned what they described as ‘barbaric and outrageous attack’ by brothers of the same family and appealed to residents of the area to furnish police with information to arrest and deal ruthlessly with the perpetrators.

On Saturday, September 15, 2018, some aggrieved persons attacked some mourners at Tehey, a suburb of Sege in the Ada West of the Greater Accra Region, where 40-year-old Ofotu Sabbah was killed and the corpse of 67-year-old Nene Zotorvie burnt together with the hearse to ashes concerning a dispute over burial site.

So far, six persons namely Nene Akwafo Bisensu Zotorvie (46), traditional ruler; Nene Narh Dutor Bisensu Zotorvie (56), traditional ruler; David Tetteh Ayimavor (36), unemployed; Maxwell Zotorvi (28), farmer; Christian Zotorvie (22), farmer; and Emmanuel Zotorvie (52), driver; have been arrested and remanded in police custody for further investigations.

When arraigned, they were charged with four counts namely conspiracy, causing unlawful damage, harm and murder at the Ada West Magistrate Court at Sege.

Soon after the incident, the Ada Paramount Chief, Nene Abram Kabu Akuaku III, addressed a press conference and distanced the Council from the burning of Nene Zotorvie’s corpse and referred to the incident as uncultured act.

He appealed to the police to intensify their search for all the perpetrators of the heinous crime to face full rigors of the law; he called for a 24-hour police patrol in the area.

The paramount chief was optimistic this would make the Ghana Education Service re-open the Tehey D/A Basic School for teaching and learning to resume.

Nene Akuaku III said “nobody should . . . shield any of the perpetrators. What happened at Tehey is unheard of in the history of Ghana and the law must deal with the people behind it.”

The paramount chief counselled his people to always resort to the law courts whenever they feel somebody is violating their rights.

He extolled the Ada West District Security Committee (DISEC) for their swift move to get the police to investigate the matter.

He used the occasion to appeal to residents of Tehey to return to the community since police have beefed up security in the area.
