Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum
A spokesperson for former Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has alleged that his boss has become a target for a deliberate smear campaign as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer race intensifies.
Yaw Opoku Mensah, the spokesperson, said the attacks are being orchestrated by supporters of a rival aspirant in an attempt to undermine Dr. Adutwum’s growing popularity among delegates.
He accused them of resorting to mudslinging and personal attacks rather than focusing on issues.
According to him, the campaign began with a series of online publications, including multiple stories on Opera News under the headline “Why is Bawumia still walking free?”
He asserted that these articles, which appeared under different author names, were later flagged as fake news, pointing out that some former senior officials of the Ministry of Education are fueling the campaign.
He recalled that a former Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), for instance, recently criticised Dr. Adutwum in an interview on Channel One TV, blaming him for challenges that accompanied the early rollout of the Free Senior High School policy.
While Dr. Adutwum has not responded publicly, his spokesperson has dismissed the allegations as politically motivated and designed to distract him from his campaign.
Mr. Mensah said despite the attacks, sources within the party maintain that Dr. Adutwum’s record in office continues to resonate strongly with delegates.
According to the spokesperson, Dr. Adutwum’s promotion of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, expansion of classroom infrastructure, and curriculum reforms are frequently cited as achievements.
He stated that party insiders also point to his reputation for running a clean campaign, his ties within the NPP hierarchy, and his consistent message of unity as reasons for his rise in the contest.
The NPP is expected to elect its flagbearer on January 31, 2026, ahead of the 2028 general election.
