Gloria Akuffo
The Attorney General (AG), Gloria Akuffo, has accused Joy FM and Myjoyonline.com of publishing a “false” court story about her in the case related to the eligibility of Martin Amidu as Special Prosecutor of Ghana.
It would be recalled that on Tuesday, May 14, Joy FM and Myjoyonline.com had the headline: ‘Amidu’s eligibility as Special Prosecutor: AG ordered to file defence.
The media outlets reported that the AG and Minister of Justice had been ordered by the Supreme Court to “file a defence justifying the appointment of Martin Amidu as Special Prosecutor.”
They also reported that the AG and Minister of Justice had been given three weeks to file the defence.
But the AG, through her Deputy, Godfred Yeboah Dame, said in a release that “it’s eminently clear that your publication that the Attorney General has been ordered by the Supreme Court to file a defence justifying the appointment of Martin Amidu as Special Prosecutor was false, unfolded and a product of an unjustified indulgence in sensationalism.”
“We are baffled that such a story was generated by your radio station, which had reporters in the Supreme Court on Tuesday, May 14, 2019, as no such order was made by the Supreme Court.”
According to the AG, “The record of proceedings in the matter would show that for the plaintiff Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine’s counsel Mr. Tony Lithur merely announced to the court the filing of a joint Memorandum of Issues.”
The AG, therefore, directed Joy FM and Myjoyonline.com, both owned by the Multimedia Group of Companies “to within three days of receipt of this letter, retract the stories complained of together with an apology with the same prominence as the earlier offending publications.”
