Miss Dappah and her team at the proposed site at Shama
The Government of Ghana is considering constructing a commercial airport to be sited in between the Central and Western Region in the country.
This was revealed to the media by the Minister of Aviation, Miss Cecilia Abena Dapaah during the inspection tour of the proposed site.
She said the work, when completed, will expand the aviation industry and facilitate the development of the two regions.
Ms. Dapaah indicated that plans are far advanced for the implementation of the project though the ministry is still in talks with all the relevant stakeholders including the traditional leaders for its take off.
“Cape Coast Airstrip is still on the drawing board but if you take an airstrip against an airport, you’ll prefer to choose airport rather than airstrip that is why we have thought outside the box to have this very good project to serve the two regions.
“We are going to look for funding as quickly as possible to start this laudable project”, she stated.
On his part, the Western Regional minister, Dr Kwaku Afriyie, who accompanied the aviation minister was very excited about the project and reiterated that the airport will serve as an alternative industrial hub for the region and the country at large since all major economic and industrial activities are concentrated in the country’s capital.
He promised his commitment in facilitating the necessary processes with the various stakeholders in making the project a reality.
The Omahene of Komenda Traditional Council, Nana Kojo Kru II, said the traditional authorities are ready to cooperate and release land for the construction of the airport. He appealed for the building of a mini harbor in the region as well.
He commended the government for the good initiatives that are coming to his traditional area.
The minister was accompanied by officials and management of Ghana Airport Company Limited, Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Appiah Kyorang and the Technical Team from the two regions.
