President Akufo-Addo has nominated four people with immense knowledge of the law to be justices of the Supreme Court.
They are Justice Samuel K. Marful-Sau and Justice Agnes M.A. Dordzie of the Court of Appeal, Prof Nii Ashie Kotey, former Dean of Faculty of Law at the University of Ghana and Nene A.O. Amegatcher, former President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) and private legal practitioner.
The First Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei-Owusu, who announced the nominations made by the President yesterday in Parliament, accordingly referred the nominees to the Appointments Committee for vetting.
The Appointments Committee is expected to announce dates for vetting of the four nominees in parliament at the end of July.
Currently, there are 12 Justices of the Supreme Court.
According to reports, some of the Supreme Court Justices would soon retire.
The current Supreme Court justices are the Chief Justice, Justice Sophia Akuffo, Justice William Atuguba, Justice Julius Ansah, Justice Mrs Sophia Adjeibea Adinyira, Justice Jones Mawulom Dotse, Justice Anin Yeboah, Justice Paul Baffoe Bonnie, Justice Nasiru Sulemana Gbadegbe, Justice Vida Akoto-Bamfo, Justice Alfred Anthony Benin, Justice Yaw Appau and Justice Gabriel Pwamang.
Atuguba Reetires
Meanwhile, Justice William Atuguba, one of Ghana’s longest serving justices of the Supreme Court, has retired effective July 1, 2018.
Justice Atuguba served in the Judiciary for 44 years.
He was appointed to the Supreme Court on April 30 1995 by former President Jerry John Rawlings.
He would be remembered for presiding over a nine-member panel, which heard the 2012 election petition.

Justice Samuel K. Marful, who rose through the ranks, has been a Court of Appeal judge for quite some time.
He sat as a High Court judge on matters at certain times.
He is noted for acquitting former Chief of Staff Kwadwo Mpiani and the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana@50 Secretariat, Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby, who were put before the court for causing financial loss to the state.
Justice Mrs. Agnes Dordzie is known for the case involving the Ghanaian serial killer, Charles Quansah, nicknamed ‘The Accra Strangler,’ who was found guilty by a seven-member jury.
He was convicted and sentenced for killing his girlfriend and nine women in 2000.
Professor Nii Ashie Kotey is an Associate Professor with the Faculty of Law, University of Ghana.
He previously served as the Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission of Ghana, Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Ghana, Legon and acting Director of the Ghana School of Law.
Nene Amegatcher is the Managing Partner of Sam Okudzeto & Associates law firm, with over 30 years of experience as a barrister and solicitor.
He has since 1994 been a senior lecturer at the Ghana Law School where he has been teaching Advocacy and Legal Ethics, as well as other ADR courses.
