President Akufo Addo on Saturday afternoon paid a visit to the house of the deceased Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Commission (PMMC), Opare Hammond.
Mr. Opare Hammond died on Friday after a short illness.
He was a former Director of Finance and Administration of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The president’s visit was to express his sympathy to the family.
President Akufo-Addo urged the family to stay strong for each other in the light of the unfortunate development.
A source close to the family told Citi News he died at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
The former Member of Parliament for the Adentan constituency’s death comes as a surprise to many because he appeared physically fit although unconfirmed citinewsroom.com reports said he had been battling with thrombosis.
The late Opare Hammond is survived by a widow and five children.
Thrombosis is the formation of a blood clot inside a blood vessel, obstructing the flow of blood through the circulatory system. It can, as a result, lead to a cardiac arrest.
During his time at PMMC, the firm partnered the Ghana Royal Gold Limited Company to construct a state-owned gold refinery which is expected to create 1000 jobs this year, 2019.
Angry PMMC staff ask Nana Addo to sack MD and dissolve the board
Some aggrieved workers of the PMMC in October 2018 called on President Nana Akufo-Addo to sack Mr. Hammond and dissolve the board.
The workers at the time claimed the MD, Kwadwo Opare Hammond, among other things had been circumventing the procurement processes of the company.
They claimed the company would collapse if the MD and the board were allowed to continue their work.
