Akufo-Addo Speaks On Volta ‘Rebels’ Attacks

President Nana Akufo-Addo

President Nana Akufo-Addo has finally opened up on recent attacks by the Volta secessionist organization, Homeland Study Group Foundation (HSGF).

Members of the Group on Friday, September 25, 2020, blocked roads linking the Volta, Greater Accra and Eastern Regions.

Later on Monday, September 28, 2020, the group attacked a bus station in Ho, the Volta Regional Capital, burning buses belonging to the State Transport Corporation (STC).

The group is pushing for the establishment of Western Togoland as a country.

The opposition National Democratic Congress had expressed concerns over the President’s seeming silence on the violent activities of the secessionist group.

But reacting to the attacks in an interview with Kumasi-based Hello FM, Mr Akufo-Addo reaffirmed his trust in the country’s security forces and has assured that the matter is being handled with the utmost urgency.

He stated that “Institutions are in place, the security agencies are doing their work, they’ve started already and we’ll see results.”

According to him, “What’s happening in the Volta Region is just by a handful of people. These secessionists. We will deal with them. I have no doubt about it.”

He noted that “If I panic, the country panics…There is no value for the country if I start making hysterical statements.”

He added that “That’s not the purpose of leadership. I am supposed to assure people that our country will work.”
