The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has denied media reports that it is collecting market tolls from head porters popularly known as Kayayeis.
According to the assembly, it has come to its notice that a market toll ticket dated April 6, 2018 which was purportedly given to a head porter, goes against a directive from government which exempted the Kayayeis from paying the GH?1.00 market toll.
A press statement signed by Sam Ayeh Datey, Coordinating Director of the Assembly, pointed out that the “gazetted 2018 fee fixing resolution by the assembly does not include head porters.”
According to the statement, the media reports are misleading and deemed to be a calculated attempt to court public disaffection for the assembly
It said the directive by central government not to charge the Kayeyeis remains in force.
However, “the gazzeted 2018 Fee Fixing Resolution captured hawkers in a chargeable group, which mandate them to pay a daily toll of GH¢ 1.00 but not “Kayayeis” as the story sought to portray”.
The statement expressed dissatisfaction and urged for the cross-checking of facts before such publications are made.
It reiterated the assembly’s commitment to ensure a smart, sustainable and resilient city to improve the quality of life of people living within the city by providing leadership and opportunities for social and economic development.
