The Ashanti Regional Police Command says it will target gangsters who promote violence in communities across the region.

DCOP Kwesi Mensa Duku, the new regional police commander, said ‘landguardism’ and gang violence would be fought fiercely by the police under his leadership.

He said the law enforcement agents would tackle the rise in violent crimes in areas such as Ahwiaa and Tafo.

He made the pledge during an interaction with media practitioners yesterday in Kumasi.

The police chief said Neighbourhood Watch members would be made to play an active role in the fight against crime.

According to him, the police would leverage the energy and enthusiasm of members of the community groups to reduce crime.

DCOP Duku said information-sharing between the police and volunteers would be increased in crime-prone areas.

“Mobile patrols by the police will be increased, and visibility, night checkpoints and Operation Calm Life would be intensified,” he noted.

He added that the police would also deal with traffic management issues in Kumasi.

“Traffic management is a problem in Kumasi and this is partly due to indiscipline on the part of drivers. We want to have free flow of traffic. We promise that there is going to be improvement in vehicular flow,” he added.

DCOP Duku called on the general public to provide the police with information on criminals to enable the command to act decisively in order to promote peace in the region.

“My vision is to make the region peaceful and conducive for socio-economic development without fear and intimidation of any person.”
