Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Frank Nsiah of the Western North Regional Police Intelligence Unit allegedly shot and killed a junior officer on Friday after a heated argument.
Constable David Gatsi was shot by the superior officer while they were returning from an operation at Awaso in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region.
He died shortly after arriving at a hospital in Sefwi Bekwai, where he had been rushed to for medical assistance.
The bloody incident occurred around 7:45pm, and the suspect officer has since been taken into custody, while investigation is underway to unravel the circumstances.
DAILY GUIDE gathered that ASP Nsiah appeared intoxicated, but it is not clear what triggered the heated argument leading to the bloody action.
According to the report, while the two officers were exchanging words in the police patrol vehicle, ASP Nsiah suddenly pulled out a pistol and allegedly shot at the Constable.
In an attempt to flee, he allegedly instructed the driver, another police officer, to stop the vehicle immediately after committing the crime, but he was captured.
The police administration, in a statement, corroborated the incident and said that the service had commenced investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the police constable.
The statement said immediately after the incident occurred, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo Dampare, dispatched a team from Accra to the Western North Region to assess the situation and interact with the personnel.
It added that the team was led by Commissioner of Police Habiba Twumasi Sarpong, who is Director-General in charge of Welfare.
On Saturday, the IGP again dispatched another team of Police Management Board members led by COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, Director-General in charge of Administration, to visit the family of the deceased and formally notify them of his passing, commiserate with them and also assure them of a thorough investigation into the incident, the statement noted.
It pointed out that a police clinical psychologist has been assigned to the family to support them through this difficult time.
āAnother team of clinical psychologists has also been deployed to the Western Regional Police Command to offer psycho-social support to the personnel of the Command following the tragic loss of our colleague,ā the statement said.
