William Amankrah Appiah
THE SEKYERE South District Director of Education, William Amankrah Appiah, has warned students who engage in sports betting in the district to desist from the act or face arrest and prosecution.
According to him, betting has become a big social menace in the district, which is seriously affecting the academic performance of students.
Mr Appiah has accordingly appealed to the district assembly to enact a bye-law that would empower the police to raid betting centres in order to arrest recalcitrant students.
The education director was speaking at the 50th anniversary celebration of Adu Gyamfi Senior High School (ADGASS) at Jamasi in the Ashanti Region.
He said plans were far advanced to run workshops for students to educate them on the effects of gambling as a strategy to curb the situation.
Meanwhile, a former chief of staff under President John Agyekum Kufuor’s government, Kwadwo Mpiani, who is a native of Jamasi has been honoured by the school for his support.
He was presented with a plaque which read: “Your determination and diligence to Adu Gyamfi SHS has soared to greater heights and is incomparable. We cherish your supportive, vibrant and exemplary nature in both actions and deeds. Kwadwo Mpiani is a true son of Jamasi who has shown a great deal of belongingness and dedication. Your passion for education and seeking the wellbeing of everyone is obvious in your political endeavour”.
