VICE PRESIDENT Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Tuesday joined family members and people in Kumasi to mark the one-week commemoration of the passing of the Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Council of Elders in the Ashanti Region, Akenten Appiah-Minkah.

Mr. Appiah-Minka, who was a lawyer and industrialist, died last week Tuesday at the age of 84 years. He served the country as a member of the Constitution Review Commission, which was established by the Mills administration.

The one-week commemoration, which was held at the precinct of the Golden Bean Hotel at the Kumasi suburb of Nhyiaeso, was attended by senior government officials and leading members of the ruling party, including the Trade Minister, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen; Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu.

Vice President Dr Bawumia said Mr Appiah-Minkah dedicated his life to the service of Ghana, describing him as a true statesman.

“I am deeply saddened by his loss and pray for the Almighty God to grant him peaceful rest. May the Lord comfort the bereaved family,” Veep Bawumia later posted on his Facebook wall.

The family observed the commemoration leading up to the burial to be held on Thursday, May 24, 2018, as announced at the event.

The commemoration, which began at about 12:00 noon, lasted about six hours, and it was one of the biggest gatherings in the Ashanti Regional capital in the new year, with many distinguished dignitaries attending.

Mr Appiah-Menka, until his death, was the Chairman of Ashanti Oil Mills, Appiah-Menka Complex Limited and Appiah-Menka Plantations.
