Bring More Confidence In Our Electoral System – Mac Manu To EC

Campaign Manager of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2016 elections wants everybody to be committed to ensuring that the Electoral Commission (EC) conducts credible polls.

Peter Mac Manu says what seems like a hard line adopted by the party on the Commission’s activities ahead of Presidential and Parliamentary election is only aimed at deepening the country’s democracy.

“We are all aiming to have a credible election at the end of the day, whose results will be acceptable to all; an election that will bring and generate more confidence in our electoral system and the Commission,” he explained.

The EC is hoping to change the date for general elections from December 7 to November 7, but the NPP has been a stern critic of the proposed change.

The opposition party says the timing of the process to change the country’s elections timetable is too close to a major election.

The party also says the EC already has its hands full with a Supreme Court order to clean the electoral roll further making voting in November a difficult possibility.

In conformity with the court order, the EC has set Monday, July 18 to re-register National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) card registrants whose names have been deleted from the register.

The Commission set the date after it announced it has deleted 56,772 names of persons who registered with the NHIS cards, deemed an illegal document for identifying a citizen.

Speaking on Top Story on Joy FM Wednesday, Mr Mac Manu says the NPP’s involvement in every activity of the EC is in the interest of the country.

“This business of NPP is challenging EC; that is not the case. We are rather strengthening and getting the EC to be on course as far as the laws, acts and others on elections in this country are concerned,” he said.
