The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has outdoored a Crime Scene Investigations Manual to aid investigators in the discharge of their duties at crime scenes.
The 164 page book covers topics including evidence gather in criminal investigations, crime scene, basic crime scene documentation, evidence collection, packaging evidence and chain of custody among other things.
The book was written by DSP David Selorm Hupkportie, the Deputy Director in charge Drug Law Enforcement Unit at the police headquarters.
The Director General in charge of Criminal Investigations Department, DCOP Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo Danquah said the book will help investigators properly investigate criminal cases without loopholes.
“This book will bridge the gap between what to do at the crime scene as prescribed by the service instructions and how to carry it out.”
She noted that the book was also reviewed by crime scene experts and urged investigators to endeavor to get a copy to constantly refresh their minds on the field.
DSP David Hukportie, the author in an address said crime scene investigation forms an integral but very vital tool in criminal investigations.
However, he said it appears crime scene investigations has not received the needed attention it deserves.
“This is partly because, even though the Ghana Police Service instructions spelt out what to do in investigating crime scene , a need was identified to enhance effective investigation at the scene.
So evidently, more attention is paid to gathering testimonials evidence during the course of criminal investigations and it is against this that the book is developed to assist criminal investigators to effectively and adequately investigate criminal cases.
He revealed that the book was reviewed by the Inspector General Of Police, Mr David Asante Apeatu, Coloniel Zibrim Ayorongo , A Military Officer In Charge Of Monitoring And Evaluation , Ghana Armed Forces and other progessionals in academia.
“The book has also been distributed in Zambia, Tanzania , Liberia, and Gambia and the feedback was good “ he added.
