A policeman in the Ashanti Region has, allegedly, shot a driver dead from behind without any tangible reason.
The driver, said to be in his mid thirties, name unknown, was driving with two other passengers in his Kia vehicle, when he was unfortunately shot from behind.
According to reports, there was a slight misunderstanding between the driver and the policeman, who was on duty at the Akwasiso Police Checkpoint before the shooting incident.
The heartbreaking incident was said to have happened at the Akwasiso Police Barrier in Manso Adubia, in the Ashanti Region, on Thursday, April 4, 2024 around 6:30am.
An eyewitness who demanded anonymity disclosed that the Kia driver, who is not a native of the area, was stopped at the police barrier by the security agents on duty at the time.
The eyewitness said after brief exchange of words, peace seemed to have been restored between the feuding parties as the driver drove away with the other two passengers onboard.
Immediately the vehicle left the police checkpoint, the policeman, allegedly, pulled the trigger, hitting the driver’s head from behind with a bullet to end his life at the spot.
The eyewitness said the body has since been deposited at the Agroyesum Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy, as the Kia car has been impounded at the police station.
According to him, the policeman (suspect) was instantly apprehended by his colleagues, who have since caged him to assist with investigations.
IGP’s Message
In a related development, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, is said to have commiserated with the wife and family of the deceased, assuring them of full investigations into the case.
“The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has detained a police officer for an alleged fatal shooting incident which occurred on April 4, 2024, at Manso Adubia in the Ashanti Region.
“The Inspector General of Police has spoken to the wife and family of the deceased and sent a high powered police delegation to commiserate with them while investigation into the incident continues,” a statement posted on the Ghana Police Service Facebook wall said.
