Deadly Riots In South Africa Instigated – Says Ramaphosa

Cyril Ramaphosa

South Africa’s President, Cyril Ramaphosa, says the deadly riots in South Africa over the jailing of former President Jacob Zuma were Instigated.

According to him, his government would not allow “anarchy, mayhem” to prevail.

Mr Ramaphosa was speaking at Ethikwini Municipality, which includes the port city Durban, one of the worst-hit areas.

The riots and looting have reportedly destroyed hundreds of businesses and killed over 100 people.

Reports say about 800 people have been arrested since the protests began few days ago.

Highways have been blocked, and businesses are reportedly being looted.

The riots are taking place as Mr Zuma – who has been jailed for 15 months over contempt – challenges his sentence at a hearing in South Africa’s top court.

Local television reports showed people looting shops and setting fire to buildings.

The riots started last week when Mr Zuma handed himself over to police to begin a 15-month sentence.

Mr Zuma had been convicted of contempt of court after failing to attend an inquiry into corruption during his presidency. He denied corruption charges against his administration.

Videos showed people rushing to loot a shopping center in Zuma’s home province of KwaZulu-Natal, on Monday.
