A newly built dormitory with funds provided by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) at Tamale Senior High School has been named after Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia by the school’s board of governors.
The Headmaster of Tamale Senior High School, Rev. Edward Azeka made the announcement at the 70th anniversary of the school in Tamale on Saturday.
“In recognition of H.E Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s contribution to the development of the school, the board of governors of the school has decided to honour him and so a new house has therefore been created and named after him that is ‘The Bawumia House’.”
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in response said, “I must thank the board of governors of Tamale Senior High School for the honour done me to name a house after me (Bawumia House) I am so humbled, I just never dreamt of it so I accept that honour on behalf of all old Tamascans. It is not just for me but all old Tamascans who have contributed in many ways to this great school of ours.”
Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, an old boy of the school, donated an amount of GH¢200,000.00 to support developmental projects under way at the Tamale Senior High School.
In a related development, he commissioned a 600-bed girls’ dormitory at the school.
The ultramodern girls’ dormitory was built by MTN-Ghana Foundation at a cost of GH¢2.8 million as part of their corporate social responsibility.
The dormitory has ultramodern washrooms and toilets, and a two bedroom apartment for the house mistress among others.
The Tamale Senior High School which was established in 1951 with 25 students now has a student population of 3,636 out which 1,200 are females.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia stated that the school has created an opportunity for the students of Northern Ghana to for the first time access secondary education in that part of the country.
According to him, the lack of secondary education over many decades in the North has deprived many potentially good secondary school materials who would have contributed their knowledge and skills to the development of the North and Ghana as a whole.
The Vice President stated Tamale Technical University, Bagabaga Training College, Tamale College of Education, Tamale Senior High School and all educational institutions around the education ridge will benefit from asphalt roads.
He thanked MTN-Ghana Foundation for building the 600-bed girls’ dormitory for the Tamale Senior High School.
