A 25-year-old driver’s mate yesterday wept uncontrollably after an Accra Circuit Court sentenced him to 18 years’ imprisonment for robbery.
The accused Kweku Amponsah aka John Darkwah, who could not be consoled by people in the court, was charged with robbery and causing harm to one Millicent Densu on October 8.
The prosecutor, Chief Superintendent Duuti Tuaruka told the court, presided over by Aboagye Tandoh that at about 11:20pm on the said day, the convict cut the palm of the complainant, who had returned from church service with a knife and snatched her belongings.
Appearing before the court, John admitted the offence and was convicted on his own plea.
The court subsequently sentenced him to 18 years’ imprisonment for robbery and five years for causing harm which are to run concurrently to serve as deterrent to others.
C/Supt. Duuti told the court that John attacked the lady at her gate and forcibly took her handbag containing a Bible, cloth, an Infinix mobile phone and perfume.
C/Supt. Duuti stated that Millicent screamed which drew the attention of the witnesses who chased him.
As a result, the prosecutor said the convict threw the mobile phone into a gutter, adding that the bag was retrieved from John upon his arrest.
