COME JANUARY 2019, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) will begin issuance of specialized stickers for the collection of the Luxury Vehicle Levy (LVL).
Deputy Minister of Information, Pius Enam Hadzide, made the announcement on Sunday during the Ministry’s bi-weekly press briefings in Accra.
Levies
According to him, vehicles with 2950 cubic centimetres are required to pay GH¢1,000 whilst those 35550-4049 cubic centimetres are to pay GH¢ 1,500, adding that those above 4049 cubic centimetres will be paying GH¢ 2,000.
He recounted that “as you may be aware, the implementation of the LVL law is already in full force after Parliament passed the bill this year to impose an annual levy on vehicles with high engine capacities.”
The DVLA, he said, is authorized by the Law to collect the levy on behalf of Government.
Descriptions
The LVL stickers, according to the deputy minister, are of the same shape and size like the normal roadworthy stickers except that they are printed in three different colours with additional printed “LVL,” information according to the three designations LVL1, LVL2, and LVL3 which are to be issued according to the category of vehicles that pay the levy.
Exemptions
According to the deputy minister, some vehicles have been earmarked for exemptions and they include: tractors, ambulances, commercial vehicles that have the capacity to transport more than 10 persons, commercial vehicles for the transport of goods; and those that the Minister may by legislative instrument exempt.
The deputy minister warned that “it is an offence for anybody to change or replace the engine in an attempt to outwit DVLA and officials of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).”
