Jean Mensa – EC Chairperson
The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that nominations for this year’s presidential and parliamentary elections will be accepted from September 9 to 13.
In a timetable detailing election activities, the EC stated that this would be followed by balloting for slots on the presidential ballot paper on September 23, 2024, and parliamentary balloting on September 24, 2024.
According to the timetable, if everything goes as planned, the Commission aims to announce the results of the 2024 presidential election within three days after the voting.
The electoral management board has also scheduled a voter registration exercise from May 7 to 27, 2024, followed by a nationwide exercise to replace lost voter ID cards beginning May 30, 2024.
It said application and compilation of transfer of votes and proxy votes will also begin from May 30, 2024 and end on June 14, 2024.
The EC indicated that this would be preceded by a comprehensive 56-day public education campaign, starting from April 1 to May 26, 2024.
The move is to ensure widespread awareness and participation, it added.
The Commission proposes to deliver a provisional voters’ register to political parties between July 9 and 18, 2024, followed by an exhibition of the register from July 15 to 24, 2024.
The final voter register will be given to political parties between August 30 and September 5, 2024, it said.
The EC has also planned meetings with stakeholders other than political parties, as well as public engagement through its “Let the Citizen Know” series.
It stated that it will arrange a “Special Voting” for selected professionals on December 2, five days before the main polls, and identified the recipients as security agents and accredited media practitioners who will be on duty for the elections on December 7, 2024.
Again, the Commission intends to establish Regional Collation Centres to play a key role in announcing regional results.
